Earth Day Bayfront Cleanup returns in San Mateo with trash pickup, contests, and a tree-planting ceremony

San Mateo, California – Environmentalists and local residents are called to meet in Ryder Park for the annual “Earth Day Bayfront Cleanup” on April 26, 2025. Set for 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, the event offers a day of active environmental preservation at the 1801 J Hart Clinton Dr. in San Mateo. This project provides volunteers with an opportunity to directly help to maintain the the bayfront area’s cleanliness and preservation, therefore augmenting local ecosystems as part of a larger project.

Participants are asked to get ready for an afternoon of practical exercise including trash pickup along the scenic coast of the bay. To assist reduce trash, event planners urge volunteers to bring reusable water bottles and dress appropriately in old clothing and sturdy shoes. Open-toed shoes or flip-flops are discouraged given the type of the activity to guarantee safety.

There may be restricted parking for the event; so, participants are advised to consider other means of transportation or let more time for parking along J. Hart Clinton Drive close to Seal Point Park. This logistical factor seeks to maximize the time spent on cleaning activities by streamlining site access.

Registration will kick off the day and allow volunteers to enjoy beverages and snacks. The event is not only about cleaning; it also includes fun with a “Catch of the Day” contest whereby participants may compete to locate the biggest or most interesting piece of trash. Adding to the lively atmosphere, DJ Ed and the Mobile Rec team will provide music and games to keep spirits high.

Bay Front CleanUp Volunteer Application

The Parks Department’s first-time involvement—planting a tree to represent the dedication to environmental restoration and preservation—will be a highlight of this year’s cleanup. The planting event will be a live show of how small deeds support more general environmental objectives.

Volunteers can relax and mingle at a barbecue following the cleanup; drinks will be served, thus allowing them to enjoy the rest of the day in a laid-back environment. This also provides volunteers—especially students—with a chance to have their volunteer verification forms signed close to the registration desk, therefore guaranteeing recognition of their services.
