Last call to join Civics 101 Academy and learn how your local government works firsthand

San Mateo County, California – Soon, those who live in San Mateo County will be able to see how their local government works. Applications are still being accepted for the Fall 2025 session of Civics 101. This program is meant to provide people in the community a firsthand look at how decisions are made and services are delivered.
The free nine-week course starts on September 4 and has been an important part of the County’s public outreach for almost twenty years. Every week, participants in Redwood City meet with county leaders, elected officials, and professionals in the field. Sessions include talks in a classroom setting as well as hands-on activities, so people can understand how the government works.
Every week, we look at a new part of how the county works. In the past, students have seen demonstrations from the Sheriff’s K-9 team, taken part in a mock trial in the courthouse, and gone to a local park and the Maple Street Correctional Center. The purpose is to show people how government choices affect their lives, from law enforcement and public health to land use and community services.
The initiative has made a lot of people more involved. Some graduates have gone on to work for the county, while others have served on local boards and commissions. The interactive structure not only helps people learn, but it also lets them discuss their own views and priorities with officials.

Classes meet Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Manzanita Hall, 500 County Center in Redwood City. The doors open at 5:30 p.m., and parking is free after 5 p.m. There will be light snacks available.
Only people who are 18 or older who live or work in San Mateo County can apply. You have to come to class once a week for the whole semester, which ends in late October.
