City of San Mateo seeks public input as transportation redesign moves into detailed planning phase

San Mateo, California – The 19th Avenue and Fashion Island Boulevard Multimodal Improvements Project is part of the City of San Mateo’s plans to upgrade its transportation network. The goal of the project is to make the corridor safer and less congested for everyone who uses it, whether they are walking, biking, driving, or taking public transportation.

The goal of the project is to make transport in the area more efficient and predictable by making specific improvements to important crossroads and travel routes. The city wants to make the experience of all visitors safer and more reliable by fixing crosswalks, adding better signs, and making traffic flow better.

During the summer, city authorities asked citizens for their opinions through an online poll and a community workshop. The next stage of development, which is currently moving into deep technical and design work, has been shaped by what people said in those meetings. Officials pointed out that the project’s success depended on people continuing to be involved so that the final designs accurately represent the needs and concerns of the community.

The city set up two opportunities in November for locals to go over new designs and give more feedback in order to keep the conversation going. The first was a workshop that took place in person at College Park Elementary School on November 5. A second virtual session is scheduled for November 13 via Zoom, which is a handy way for more people in the community to take part.

The same things will be talked about at both meetings: how public comments have been used to improve the designs, the findings of the project’s traffic studies, and new concept plans. City planners will be there at each session to answer questions and get further feedback from everyone who come.

As the city works out the last aspects of the engineering and gets ready for construction, community outreach is scheduled to continue until early 2026. According to the people working on the project, the main goal is to create a design that is balanced and makes the area safer and easier to get around without making it less accessible or changing the essence of the neighborhood.

Residents are invited to keep active as the project moves forward. Each phase makes improvements based on what the public says, which shows that the city is committed to working together to plan and a more connected future for transportation.
