San Mateo residents encouraged to weigh in on proposed zoning updates at January 15 online meeting

San Mateo, California – The City of San Mateo is hosting a virtual workshop about its current Zoning Code Update, and soon residents and community members will be able to give their thoughts on proposed changes to the City’s development rules. The Zoom meeting will take place on Thursday, January 15, 2026, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The City is working to update its Zoning Code so that it is in line with the new General Plan 2040 and the Housing Element for 2023–2031. The workshop is part of this larger endeavor. City officials say the modification is meant to make sure that zoning districts better represent planned land uses while also supporting the long-term housing, transit, and environmental goals laid out in those policy documents.
The City says that the update will do more than just fix technical problems. The planned changes will eliminate old rules, add new alternatives for development, and rearrange the code to make it easier for citizens, property owners, and developers to comprehend and utilize. Officials see the process as an important part of making the General Plan 2040 vision a reality.
During the online meeting, staff will give a brief summary of the Zoning Code Update and talk about how the work is being guided by the goals and policies of the General Plan.

A big part of the meeting will be for people to give their opinions. People will be asked to talk about the main problems they think the new Zoning Code should fix. There will also be time for questions and discussion.
Anyone with a desktop computer, tablet, or smartphone with an internet connection will be able to attend the conference. People who live in the area who want to know more about the project before the workshop can obtain background information and updates on the City’s planning website.
