Women’s Hall of Fame spotlight shines on San Mateo County community changemakers

San Mateo County, California – Alyson Suzuki’s journey to community leadership started at home. Her mother was an immigrant, so she saw how hard it might be for families to go to schools, health care, and social services when language and cultural hurdles got in the way. She recalled those early experiences while she worked to support her family and ultimately created a career in education and social services.

Suzuki saw how barriers in communication and understanding may hold down progress for whole communities over time. Instead of accepting those hurdles, she promised to change how public agencies meet the needs of different families.

Her work now focuses on making it easier for Asian families and other underprivileged populations in San Mateo County to get language help and building stronger, longer-lasting support systems for them.

On March 6, Suzuki will be admitted into the 2026 class of the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, which is an official way to honor her dedication. Along with four other inductees, she will be honored for her work in public service, community activism, and student leadership.

The 2026 honorees represent a wide range of contributions. Andrea Jones is being recognized for a career devoted to improving outcomes for children and families. Terry Nagel, a former mayor of Burlingame, is honored for decades of civic involvement and volunteer service that have shaped her community.

Two high school seniors, Danika Gonzalez Johnston from Half Moon Bay High School and Amani Shroff from Carlmont High School, are also joining them. Their projects show how much of a difference young people can make when they have a chance.

Organizers say the group reflects both experience and promise. Ann Girard, president of the Commission on the Status of Women, said the Hall of Fame celebrates individuals whose vision and dedication strengthen the community as a whole.

“We are very excited to honor three extraordinary women and two youth at our Women’s Hall of Fame,” said Ann Girard, president of the Commission on the Status of Women. “This iconic event provides an opportunity to recognize the talents, contributions and vision of these women who improve and strengthen the community for all of us.”

The ceremony for the Women’s Hall of Fame and Young Women of Excellence will take place on March 6 at 4:30 p.m. in the Farallon Room at Skyline College in San Bruno. People from the community, family, and supporters come together for the event to honor accomplishments that have made a lasting influence in San Mateo County.

Tickets may be purchased on Eventbrite.
