California proclaims AmeriCorps Week to recognize volunteers strengthening communities across the state

California Governor Gavin Newsom has officially proclaimed March 9 through March 13, 2026, as “AmeriCorps Week,” recognizing the contributions of volunteers who serve communities across the state and the nation. The announcement highlights the longstanding role of service in strengthening neighborhoods, supporting vulnerable populations, and building connections among residents.

In issuing the proclamation, Newsom pointed to the long tradition of Americans stepping forward to help their communities in moments of need. Volunteer service, he noted, has consistently played a central role in addressing challenges and fostering stronger local ties.

Each year, thousands of Californians participate in AmeriCorps programs, working in schools, food banks, health clinics, and other community organizations. Their efforts range from helping veterans access essential services to supporting young people as they prepare for future careers. AmeriCorps members have also assisted communities responding to emergencies, including the Los Angeles wildfires in 2025.

California operates the largest AmeriCorps State program in the country. The program works alongside other initiatives within the state’s Service Corps network, including the California Climate Action Corps, College Corps, and Youth Service Corps. Together, these programs support service projects in communities across the state, creating one of the largest coordinated service networks in the country.

State officials emphasized that national service programs play a significant role in strengthening civic engagement and expanding opportunities for communities. At a time when such programs face uncertainty and proposed reductions at the federal level, California leaders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting volunteer service efforts.

AmeriCorps Week is intended to recognize the dedication of the millions of Americans who serve through AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors while encouraging more residents to take part in community service. The proclamation was signed by Governor Newsom on March 7, 2026, and marks a week dedicated to honoring those who contribute their time and energy to helping others.
