Trump approves Newsom request for federal help after Orange County chemical emergency

Sacramento, California – California’s emergency response in Orange County gained federal support after President Donald Trump approved Governor Gavin Newsom’s request for a Presidential Emergency Declaration tied to the hazmat incident in Garden Grove.

The decision brings additional federal help into an already active response, as state and local agencies continue working to protect nearby communities from risks connected to a damaged methyl methacrylate, or MMA, tank. The Orange County Fire Authority confirmed overnight that the threat of a massive explosion from the tank has been mitigated, marking a major step toward stabilizing the scene.

Still, officials say the danger has not passed. Public health and environmental concerns remain, and evacuation orders continue in affected areas.

“California didn’t wait for this situation to escalate — we moved early, aggressively, and in close partnership with local responders to protect lives and support impacted communities. We are grateful for the federal government approving our request and helping strengthen the resources already on the ground to help this community recover safely,” Governor Gavin Newsom said.

The state response has drawn in more than 785 state and local emergency personnel. Firefighters, law enforcement officers, hazardous materials specialists, environmental scientists, public health workers, transportation crews and emergency coordinators have been working around the clock with local agencies.

Newsom had already proclaimed a State of Emergency for Orange County on Friday and activated the State Operations Center, directing state agencies to move quickly with local officials on response and recovery efforts.

With the federal declaration now approved, the Federal Emergency Management Agency can provide direct assistance, including personnel, equipment and specialized resources for life-saving operations.

State officials noted that this type of emergency declaration is different from a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration. An emergency declaration is aimed at immediate protective action during or ahead of an incident, while a major disaster declaration usually follows damage assessments and can open the door to wider, longer-term recovery programs.

Residents in evacuation zones are being urged to leave when told and not delay. Officials also say people outside evacuation areas do not need to take extra precautionary steps at this time.

The public is being asked to stay away from the incident area, avoid watching response operations in person, and check on neighbors, older adults and others who may need help with transportation, shelter or medical needs.

Officials are also urging Californians to rely on trusted updates from local emergency and public health agencies, rather than rumors or social media speculation.

Evacuation maps are available through the City of Garden Grove website, while resources for those affected by the Garden Grove Hazmat Incident are available through the Cal OES Community Resource page.
