San Mateo kitchen fire incident leads to public warning about safe ways to handle burning pans
San Mateo, California – A kitchen fire can turn dangerous in seconds, especially when someone tries to put out the flames using the wrong household item. San Mateo police are reminding residents that even a seemingly simple attempt to stop a fire can create additional risks when proper safety precautions are not followed.
The warning comes after an emergency response to a cooking fire earlier this week in which someone attempted to smother the flames with an ordinary household blanket. Fortunately, emergency crews brought the situation under control before it could escalate further.
The San Mateo Police Department shared details about the incident in a public safety announcement, highlighting the importance of knowing how to respond when a fire starts during cooking.
According to the department, officers responded alongside personnel from the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department after the cooking fire was reported. The situation involved an attempt to extinguish the flames using a household blanket, a method authorities specifically warn residents not to use.
Emergency responders managed to contain the fire quickly, preventing the incident from developing into a more serious emergency.

Although the situation ended without further escalation, police used the opportunity to explain several important steps that residents should follow when dealing with kitchen fires.
One of the department’s main warnings concerns the use of blankets and towels. Residents should never attempt to extinguish a cooking fire with either of these common household items.
For a small fire that remains contained inside a cooking pan, authorities recommend a different approach. If it is safe to do so, a person should carefully slide a metal lid or baking sheet over the pan to cover the flames.
The burner should then be turned off, and the pan should remain covered until it has cooled completely.
Police also emphasized two actions that must be avoided during a grease fire: pouring water onto the flames and attempting to move a burning pan.
The department stressed that personal safety must remain the priority. If flames begin spreading beyond the pan, or if someone is uncertain about whether the fire can be handled safely, everyone should leave the building and call 911.
The San Mateo Police Department also thanked its partners at the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department for their response to the incident.
The message to residents is straightforward: understanding a few basic cooking fire precautions can help prevent a small kitchen emergency from becoming something much more dangerous.
