Community input sought as San Mateo plans traffic and pedestrian upgrades

San Mateo, California – San Mateo residents will soon be able to provide their opinions on proposed safety upgrades at the intersection of Peninsula Avenue and Delaware Street. This area has been in the news for traffic and pedestrian safety issues. City officials are asking people in the community to come to a public meeting soon to provide their thoughts and find out more about the changes that are planned.

The meeting in person will take place on January 29, 2026, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. It will happen at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Peninsula Avenue and Delaware Street Intersection Improvements Project will be explained by city staff at the Community Center, located at 725 Monte Diablo Avenue, in Social Room A/B. They will talk about the project’s objectives and the design ideas that are being considered. Attendees will be able to ask questions, look at documents, and give feedback directly to the project team.

There will also be a virtual meeting on February 3, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for those who can’t make it in person. The online session will be held on Zoom, which will let those who live in the city take part from home while still talking to city officials and looking over the proposed changes to the intersection. The virtual format is meant to make it easier for more people in the community to take part.

City officials emphasize that getting input from the public is an important element of the planning process. The feedback from both sessions will help make final design decisions and make sure that the project meets the needs of individuals who live, work, and travel through the area. The suggested changes are meant to make the intersection safer for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles, as well as make traffic flow better overall.
