Suspected theft at San Mateo mall leads to quick arrest after coordinated police response
San Mateo, California – A routine afternoon at a popular shopping destination in San Mateo quickly turned into a coordinated police response after a suspected theft drew the attention of store employees and law enforcement.
On March 25, 2026, just before 2 p.m., officers with the San Mateo Police Department were dispatched to a report of theft in progress at a Lululemon store inside Hillsdale Mall.
According to the San Mateo PD, employees had identified an individual who was allegedly taking merchandise and attempting to leave without paying, prompting an immediate call for assistance.

By the time officers arrived, the suspect had already exited the store and was walking away from the area. However, the description provided by witnesses proved critical. An officer on scene quickly located a man matching those details nearby and detained him without incident.
Authorities later identified the individual as 21-year-old Jamir Ortiz, a resident of San Mateo. During the detention, officers recovered several items of clothing that had been concealed, with a total value of $1,287. The merchandise was confirmed to have come from the store.
Investigators also believe the incident was not isolated. Ortiz is suspected of being involved in multiple prior thefts from the same retailer, with reported losses in those cases exceeding $3,500. These earlier incidents had been under investigation, and the latest event appears to have provided the breakthrough officers needed.
Following the recovery of the items and confirmation of the alleged theft, Ortiz was taken into custody. He was later transported to the San Mateo County Jail, where he was booked on a charge of grand theft.
