New rider feedback gives Caltrain strong approval marks after electrification launch
San Mateo County – Caltrain’s latest rider survey is giving the agency a clear signal: passengers are responding positively to the system’s faster, more frequent electric service.
The agency’s Technology, Operations, Planning and Safety Committee recently reviewed findings from Caltrain’s 2025 Triennial Survey, which recorded some of the strongest rider approval marks in recent years. The results show that the shift to electrified service has not only improved the experience for longtime passengers, but also helped attract new riders. According to the survey, one-third of current riders are new to the system.
The numbers point to broad satisfaction across key parts of the passenger experience. Riders rated the current schedule 4.1 out of 5, up from 3.7 in 2022. On-time performance climbed from 3.9 to 4.4, while the overall Caltrain experience rose to 4.5, compared with 4.1 in the previous survey. Those gains match other feedback gathered since the launch of the agency’s electrified service.

Commutes remain the backbone of Caltrain ridership, though travel patterns continue to reflect the reality of hybrid work. Most passengers reported using the train two to three days per week. The survey also found that two-thirds of riders have access to a car, showing that many passengers are choosing Caltrain even when driving is available. At the same time, 37% of riders are considered low-income, underscoring the system’s role as a transportation option for a wide range of communities.
How riders reach stations also varies. About 33% walk to their origin station, while 18% use transit. Another 17% arrive by bike, scooter or other active transportation, 17% are dropped off by car or rideshare, and 16% drive and park. Fare habits are shifting as well, with 86% of respondents using Clipper, while paper ticket use continues to decline.
San Francisco Station remains the system’s busiest point, leading in both boardings at 28% and departures at 19%. Other major boarding stations include Palo Alto, San Jose Diridon, Redwood City, Mountain View, Millbrae and Hillsdale. For departures, San Jose Diridon, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Redwood City ranked among the leading stations.
Caltrain received 3,622 responses during a four-week survey period last fall, with a margin of error of plus or minus 1.47 percent and a 69% response rate. The agency says the findings will help shape future service decisions and guide promotion efforts as it continues building on the momentum of electrification.
