San Mateo extends recruitment for residents interested in city boards and commissions

San Mateo, California – San Mateo residents who want a closer role in local government now have more time to step forward, after the recruitment period was extended for several city board and commission openings.
The extended recruitment includes Youth Commissioner seats on the Civic Arts Commission, along with regular member openings on the Personnel Board and the Measure S Oversight Committee.
The vacancies give residents, and in one case younger community members, a chance to take part in city discussions, review local issues and help shape decisions that affect San Mateo.
Two Youth Commissioner positions are available on the Civic Arts Commission. These are one-year terms, and applicants must be between 13 and 17 years old. They must also live or study in the City of San Mateo.
Youth Commissioners are not voting members. Instead, they serve as non-voting, ex officio representatives appointed to advise boards or commissions. City officials also noted that these positions are separate from the City’s Youth Activities Council and the County of San Mateo Youth Commission. The interview date for the Civic Arts Commission Youth Commissioner openings is scheduled for Friday, May 22, at 6:00 p.m., though interview schedules may change.

The Measure S Oversight Committee has three vacancies. The open seats include full terms running through June 10, 2030, as well as a partial term through June 10, 2027. The interview date for those positions has not yet been determined.
The Personnel Board also has one vacancy, with a full term running through June 10, 2030. Its interview date is also still to be determined.
Residents interested in applying are encouraged to learn more about each board or commission before submitting an application. Attending a meeting of the board or commission under consideration is highly encouraged, as it can give applicants a clearer view of the work, expectations and time involved.
Commissioners and board members are appointed by the City Council and serve without pay. Standard terms are four years, unless a partial term is needed to fill an unscheduled vacancy. Members may be reappointed for up to two consecutive full terms. Most boards and commissions meet about once a month, though schedules vary, and members should expect to spend additional time preparing for meetings.
Applicants for regular board and commission positions must be residents and registered voters of the City of San Mateo. Meeting attendance is required, and appointees must attend a commissioner orientation session and any required training, including ethics training.
Anyone having problems accessing application forms may contact the City Clerk’s Office at (650) 522-7040 or email [email protected]. Eligible applicants will be contacted by City Clerk staff with more details about interview dates and times.
