Speeding crackdown puts reckless drivers on notice across San Mateo, extra officers deployed
San Mateo, California – A few miles per hour can make the difference between a close call and a crash that changes lives. In San Mateo, police are asking drivers to ease off the accelerator before speed turns an ordinary trip into a tragedy.
The message is direct: “slow the fast down.” The San Mateo Police Department has placed additional officers on patrol to watch for motorists who exceed posted limits or travel too fast for current road, traffic and weather conditions.
The increased enforcement comes as speeding remains one of the most persistent dangers on California roads. According to the 2025 California Traffic Safety Survey, it is consistently the top safety concern among drivers surveyed across the state.
National figures show the scale of the problem. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 11,288 people were killed in speeding-related crashes across the United States in 2024. Those deaths represented 29% of all traffic fatalities recorded during the year.
California accounted for 1,139 speeding-related deaths in 2024 alone.
Behind each number is a trip that did not end as planned. Police say the danger is not limited to motorists driving far above the speed limit. Even a relatively small increase in speed leaves a driver with less time to notice a hazard, make a decision and stop or steer away from danger. Higher speed also increases the force of impact when a collision occurs.
“Speeding is dangerous and puts everyone at risk,” Traffic Sergeant Nick Ryan said.
“Your daily choice to drive within the speed limit protects everyone in our community. Risky driving behaviors like speeding continue to cause preventable tragedies on California roads.”

Officers are encouraging motorists to build safer driving habits before getting behind the wheel. Planning ahead and leaving extra travel time can reduce the pressure to rush, particularly when traffic is heavier than expected.
Drivers should follow posted limits throughout the city, with added caution in school zones and work zones, where road users may be more exposed and conditions can change quickly. The posted limit is not always the safest possible speed, either. Rain, congestion, limited visibility or roadway hazards may require motorists to slow down even further.
Police are also warning against aggressive behaviors that often accompany speeding. Tailgating gives drivers less room to respond when traffic suddenly stops, while weaving between lanes can create unpredictable movements that place surrounding motorists at risk.
The department’s enforcement effort is intended to reinforce a simple point: arriving a little sooner is never worth endangering another person. Drivers share the road with passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, road workers and other motorists, all of whom depend on the decisions made behind the wheel.
