Oath ceremony launches the next chapter for 11 San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office employees
San Mateo County, California – A sheriff’s badge may be small, but the oath behind it carries the weight of an entire community. Early this week, 11 new team members took that first formal step at the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
The ceremony also recognized several employees who recently earned promotions, creating a moment that looked both forward and back, welcoming people at the beginning of their service while celebrating others moving into new responsibilities.
Sheriff Ken Binder officially administered the oath to six deputy sheriff trainees, one correctional officer and four professional staff members. Together, they entered assignments that support the agency’s work in public safety, community engagement and organizational excellence.
The group represents several sides of the Sheriff’s Office. Deputy sheriff trainees are beginning a path toward serving in sworn law enforcement roles, while the new correctional officer joins the agency’s work within the county’s correctional system. The four professional staff members will contribute in positions that help keep the wider organization operating.
For each person, the ceremony marked more than a change in title or the start of a new job. Taking the oath formally placed them within an agency responsible for serving communities across San Mateo County.

Binder used the occasion to remind the new employees that being sworn in was only the opening step in a much longer public service journey.
“As you take your oath today, remember this moment is not the finish line, it is the beginning of a new chapter,” Binder said.
“Continue to learn, continue to grow, continue to give back to others and never lose sight of why you chose a life of service.”

His message also reflected the significance of the promotions celebrated during the gathering. Advancement within a public safety agency brings new duties, greater expectations and additional opportunities to guide colleagues and serve residents.
The combination of new hires and promoted employees gave the ceremony a broader meaning. It showed an organization adding new talent while recognizing the experience and continued development of existing team members.
