San Mateo County offers free food, music, and entertainment at Inclusion Festival in Redwood City on Thursday, July 25

San Mateo County, California – San Mateo County welcomes the local residents at the 5th Annual Inclusion Festival this Thursday, July 25th, in honoring the diversity and spirit of its disabled community. This free-of-charge festival offers a day full of food, entertainment, and music at Red Morton Park in Redwood City.

Attendees are invited to gather at the Magical Bridge Playground in the park at 1120 Roosevelt Ave from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Designed to provide barrier-free fun for everyone, this location is particularly among the first inclusive and open outdoor playgrounds in the county. Long-time County Commission on Disabilities member Angela Piazza stressed the importance of the playground’s location.

“With the event being adjacent to the Redwood City Magical Bridge Playground, an all-inclusive playground, it reinforces the message of barrier-free fun,” she said.

First held in August 2018, the Inclusion Festival has expanded greatly in scope to link the community and raise awareness of individuals with disabilities. Originally scheduled in Burton Park in San Carlos, the festival attracted an astounding turnout—more than 400 people. The event date was moved to July last year to coincide with Disability Pride Month and to recognize the Americans with Disabilities Act, the first civil rights statute for individuals with disabilities.

Warren Slocum, President of the Board of Supervisors and a staunch supporter of the festival, will be addressing the attendees for the second time.

“The festival is a time for everyone to come together and celebrate members of our community with disabilities. It’s our mission to support and connect all county residents, particularly those with disabilities, to available resources that will enrich their lives,” Slocum said.

There will be 47 exhibitors from San Mateo County departments, municipal officials, handicap organizations, and disability agencies this year. Among the notable participants are HIP Housing, Supervisors Ray Mueller and Noella Corzo, San Mateo County Jobs for Youth, the Department of Rehabilitation, San Mateo County Public Health, Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Victim Services Division.

The County liaison to the commission, Andrew Eng, highlighted the festival’s importance in connecting the disabled population with useful services some of which they would not have known about before.

Complementary boxed lunches offered by San Mateo County’s Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VRS) containing sandwiches, chips, cookies, and water will be enjoyed by the first 450 guests. Children will have the chance to receive and play with free balloon animals and the event promises interesting family-friendly entertainment with a DJ.

“This festival not only offers a day filled with music, food and entertainment but also stands as a testament to the values of inclusivity, especially during Disability Pride Month … It’s a place where everyone, regardless of ability, can enjoy the festivities and learn about the resources available in San Mateo County,” Piazza said.
