San Mateo County offers free Civics 101 Academy to educate residents on local government, to rum from September 4 through October 30

San Mateo County, California – Have you ever wondered where your tax dollars truly go and how directly county government operations affect your neighborhood? San Mateo County’s free yearly Civics 101 Academy could just be the golden ticket if you’re eager to learn the nuances of local government.

Planned for this fall, Civics 101 is a wonderful initiative meant to inform and motivate people about the inner operations of almost twenty different County agencies. From basic services like Health and Public Works to specialist areas like the Coroner’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office, the academy provides a thorough picture of local government operations.

A set of in-depth presentations and instructional field trips will help participants in the program gain knowledge from and interaction with County leaders, including elected officials. Whether one is seeking quick answers or networking with other San Mateans, Civics 101 promotes a vibrant learning atmosphere.

Highlighting the importance of public involvement, Supervisor Warren Slocum, president of the Board of Supervisors, emphasized the dual benefits of the program.

“Civics 101 is a great opportunity not just to hear from and about the County but for us to hear from you, too. Come tell us your priorities and great ideas. Throw the hard questions our way. Get inspired to join one of our numerous advisory boards and commissions or even join the ranks of our dedicated employees,” said Supervisor Slocum.

The academy attendees last year engaged in a variety of exciting activities including a K-9 demonstration, a fake trial on justice system night, and a weekend hike in Edgewood Park. Aiming to both educate and entertain, the next courses provide similar activities.

From September 4 through October 30, the Academy runs nine straight Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:30 PM at the County Center in Redwood City. Doors open at 5:30 PM; free parking is available close by.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old as of September 4, 2024, and either live or work in San Mateo County. They also have to promise showing up one evening every week for the program.
