Free City Services Academy in San Mateo to run from August 21 to November 6, applications are due August 7

San Mateo, California – The City of San Mateo has announced the registration opening for its much awaited City Services Academy, a program meant to increase locals’ knowledge of local government processes by means of a hands-on learning experience. Free of charge to all attendees, the Academy is scheduled to operate from August 21, 2024, to November 6, 2024, on Wednesday evenings between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM. However, there will be no class on October 2.

Under the Council/City Manager style of government, the City Services Academy provides an in-depth look into the management of the city whereby participants will engage with important city authorities like the City Manager, Fire Chief, Police Chief, and other department heads. The curriculum seeks to clarify the everyday activities and the strategic decision-making process in several city agencies.

Designed for anyone sixteen years of age and above who live or work in San Mateo, the program claims to cover a variety of subjects using site visits, case studies, and classroom discussions. According to Laurie Strange of the City Manager’s Office said, the program is a great chance for residents to see behind the scenes of what it takes to run a city and understand the complexity of municipal government.

The class size is limited to guarantee quality interaction and learning opportunities, hence registration is essential. Prospective participants are encouraged to apply by the deadline on August 7, 2024. Applications are available online; anyone needing additional help can personally get in touch with Laurie Strange by phone at (650) 522-7019 or email for more information.

Sessions will take place at several sites all across the city, offering a dynamic learning atmosphere different from the usual classroom. This arrangement not only makes practical learning easier but also exposes participants to several city services personally.

The Academy especially emphasizes creating a cooperative environment whereby local authorities and citizens could share ideas and answers. The objective of the program is not only to educate but also empower people to help their community grow, thus this engagement is fundamental.
