San Mateo County event on March 13 to educate residents on disaster readiness and immigration protections

San Mateo County, California – Promising a robust dialogue on pressing local issues such as wildfire safety and immigration rights, San Mateo County’s newly sworn-in Supervisor Jackie Speier is set to host her first town hall meeting of the year on Thursday, March 13th. Open to all residents of San Bruno and surrounding areas, the event will take place at the newly inaugurated San Bruno Recreation and Aquatic Center located at 251 City Park Way, starting at 6 p.m.
The former Congress member, who took office as the District 1 supervisor in January, emphasized her commitment to direct communication with her constituents.
“You can ask me about any topic on your mind,” said Speier. “To understand your thoughts and concerns, I want to hear from you directly.”
The agenda for the evening includes key presentations from county officials on two critical and timely topics: the ever-present threat of wildfires and the protection of immigration rights amidst growing concerns over ICE raids.
Speaking on wildfire safety, Speier emphasized the need of being ready—a lesson reinforced by recent terrible fires in Southern California.
“The recent wildfires in Southern California were a tragic and urgent reminder that no one is immune to the dangers of natural disasters,” Speier said. “We have areas in our county with similar topography to Pacific Palisades.”
The County Department of Emergency Management will provide basic advice on protecting homes and families against fires in order to increase community preparedness. Building on this base, Speier has also organized a subsequent countywide event called “Be Wildfire Safe & Ready,” set for April 26 at the San Mateo County Event Center.
This program will delve deeper how to create efficient evacuation plans and will include a lot of tools, including presentations by emergency managers and first responders.
“I am very concerned about the uncertainty regarding ICE raids in our communities,” Speier said. “The San Mateo County Office of Community Affairs will talk about the rights you have to protect yourself and loved ones.”
