San Mateo invites residents to weigh in on Humboldt Street bike lane alternatives, the meeting set for August 25

San Mateo, California – Residents of San Mateo are asked to take part in the next step of the city’s ongoing effort to make the North Central neighborhood safer for cyclists and pedestrians. The second of three community meetings on the Humboldt Street Bike Lane Alternatives will take place on Monday, August 25, 2025, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center Assembly Room, which is at 725 Monte Diablo Avenue. If you can’t make it in person, you can also join via Zoom.

The workshop will provide community members a chance to share their thoughts on potential designs for bike lanes and pedestrian safety on Fremont and Idaho streets. These streets are being considered as possible alternatives to bike lanes on Humboldt Street. City personnel will give updates on the project, answer questions, and have an open house where people can look at and comment on draft design ideas. Organizers say that no decisions will be taken at this meeting. Instead, it will be a chance for the public to give their opinions before the city moves forward.

Earlier this year, the City Council started the project after asking staff to look into whether it would be possible to move some bike traffic from Humboldt Street to Fremont and Idaho streets. The order from February 3, 2025, additionally directed the city to look into a pilot program for street lighting and traffic calming enhancements along Humboldt to make residents feel safer, see better, and deal with traffic.

This second session is part of the city’s ongoing attempt to keep locals involved in the decision-making process. Participants will be able to see conceptual drawings, ask specific questions, and give their thoughts on how the proposed modifications might effect how people utilize the streets in their neighborhoods every day. There will be light snacks and free childcare available on site. There will also be help in Spanish and Chinese to make sure that as many people as possible may take part.

The Humboldt Street Bike Lane Alternatives Project’s main purpose is to make the streets safer and easier to get around for everyone, including cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles. City authorities want to find a way to meet the demands of neighborhood residents while also meeting the increased demand for bike connectivity by looking at other routes and better infrastructure.
