San Mateo comedy night turns laughter into support for breast cancer patients
San Mateo, California – A night built around punchlines will carry a much more serious purpose in San Mateo this fall. On October 3, the San Mateo Police Department and San Mateo Police Officers’ Association will bring back “Laughter is the Breast Medicine,” their 21-and-over comedy fundraiser supporting breast cancer awareness and patients beginning treatment.
The idea is simple: use humor to bring people together, then turn that crowd into real help. Proceeds support SMPD’s Pink Patch Project efforts, including “Breast Cancer Battle Baskets” created to provide practical assistance to people facing a new diagnosis.

The event is part of the wider Pink Patch Project, a campaign that traces its roots to California law enforcement. The effort began in 2013 with the Seal Beach Police Department, where officers wore pink versions of their uniform patches during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 2015, Irwindale police expanded the concept by selling patches and raising more than $20,000 for City of Hope.
Since then, the campaign has spread to hundreds of police, sheriff, fire, EMS and federal agencies. Participating personnel wear bright pink patches during October, using an unusual twist on the traditional uniform to start conversations about screening, early detection and breast cancer support. Collectively, Pink Patch Project efforts have raised well over $1.5 million worldwide.

San Mateo has added its own local character to the campaign. In addition to the comedy night, SMPD and SMPOA have used pink patches, merchandise sales and community events to raise awareness and provide assistance. Previous Pink Patch activities have included mobile mammogram screenings at no cost to patients, health resources, vendors, food, music and police demonstrations.
The message behind those efforts remains: “Detect it. Treat it. Defeat it.”

That message carries particular weight because about one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. The department’s approach pairs that serious reality with highly visible community events meant to encourage discussion and support.
