San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office appoints Captain Mike Tabak to lead San Carlos police services
San Mateo County, California – A new chapter has begun for law enforcement in San Carlos as the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, working alongside city officials, has named Captain Mike Tabak as the next Chief of Police Services for the San Carlos Police Bureau.
Sheriff Ken Binder announced the selection in partnership with the City of San Carlos, marking a leadership transition rooted in long-standing service to the community.
Captain Tabak officially assumed the role on Sunday, March 15, 2026, bringing with him nearly two decades of experience within the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
His career began as a correctional officer, a position that introduced him to the complexities of public safety before he moved into patrol work as a deputy sheriff. Over the years, he served communities including Millbrae, San Carlos, and the unincorporated areas of Redwood City through the Headquarters Patrol Bureau.

Throughout his career, Tabak has placed a strong emphasis on mentorship and community-centered policing. As a field training officer, he played a key role in guiding new deputies entering the profession, helping shape the next generation of law enforcement leaders. His work also extended into crisis response, where he served as the county’s Crisis Intervention Training Coordinator and participated in the Crisis Negotiation Unit, assisting individuals facing some of their most difficult moments.
After advancing to detective, Tabak partnered with Behavioral Health and Recovery Services to lead the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team in San Carlos. Under his leadership, the program grew into a model for crisis co-response in the Bay Area, strengthening collaboration between law enforcement and behavioral health professionals.
Returning to San Carlos as the bureau’s leader carries special meaning for Tabak, who has spent much of his career serving the community.
“I’m truly honored to serve as Chief of Police Services for the City of San Carlos, a community I have had the opportunity to serve throughout my career,” said Captain Tabak.
“I promise to deliver compassionate, consistent and credible leadership for the community and the incredible deputies and professional staff who keep the City of Good Living safe.
