San Mateo community gathers to remember fallen officer Gordon Joinville

San Mateo, California – Nearly 58 years after Sgt. Gordon Joinville was killed in the line of duty, San Mateo paused to remember not only how he died, but how he served.

The day of remembrance began at the place where Sgt. Joinville lost his life, near 5th Avenue and South Claremont Street. It was a quiet first stop, but a meaningful one. Those gathered stood at the location where a painful chapter in the city’s history began, reflecting on the sacrifice made there and the lasting weight it still carries for the San Mateo Police Department and the wider community.

From there, the tribute moved to Skylawn Memorial Park, where Sgt. Joinville’s gravesite became the next place of honor. The visit offered a more personal moment of respect, connecting the memory of his service with the place where he rests. For those who attended, it was a reminder that line-of-duty deaths do not fade with time. They remain part of a department’s story, carried by officers, families, colleagues, and residents across generations.

The day concluded with a public memorial at Joinville Park, a space that continues to keep his name present in the community he served. Reflective words were shared by Chief Barberini, Chaplain McClendon, and Lt. Pak. Retired District Attorney Bill Larsen also spoke, offering his own reflections on prosecuting the case tied to Sgt. Joinville’s death.

The gathering brought together many people who came to pay their respects, including District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe and members of his office, members of the 100 Club of San Mateo County, a contingent from the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department, and department heads from several divisions within the City of San Mateo. Also present was Bob Reed, who found Sgt. Joinville and called in the incident.

Officials expressed appreciation for everyone who took time out of the day to honor Sgt. Joinville, as well as for the public’s support while respects were paid.

A video tribute from the day’s events is expected to be shared on Saturday, May 23, the actual date of Sgt. Joinville’s passing. As that anniversary approaches, the message from the memorial was simple and lasting: keep Sgt. Gordon Joinville in your thoughts, and remember the service and sacrifice behind his name.
