14 San Mateo County interns begin summer training with public safety teams

San Mateo County, California – Fourteen young professionals are stepping into a close-up view of public safety this summer as the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office opens its Summer 2026 Internship Program.

The Sheriff’s Office introduced the group after what it described as a highly competitive selection process. The interns were chosen for their experience, their interest in public service and their personal connection to San Mateo County. For the next several weeks, they will move beyond the classroom and into the day-to-day work of one of the county’s key public safety agencies.

The program is designed to give interns hands-on experience across several areas of the Sheriff’s Office. Their work will take them into the Patrol and Investigations Bureaus, as well as Support Services and the Corrections Divisions. Each placement offers a different look at what it means to serve the public, from responding to community needs to supporting investigations, managing operations and understanding the responsibilities tied to corrections.

The interns will work alongside both sworn personnel and professional staff. That mix is important. Public safety is often seen through the most visible roles, but the Sheriff’s Office depends on many moving parts. Patrol deputies, investigators, correctional staff, administrative teams and support personnel all help keep the agency running. For students and young professionals considering a future in the field, the internship offers a chance to see that work from the inside.

The Sheriff’s Office said the program is also about building the next generation of public safety professionals. By giving interns real exposure to the work, the agency hopes they will develop skills, confidence and a deeper understanding of the communities they may one day serve.

“We’re proud to support these future leaders as they begin this exciting chapter of their professional journeys,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

For the interns, the summer ahead is not just a resume-building opportunity. It is a first step into a profession shaped by service, responsibility and trust. For the Sheriff’s Office, it is a chance to invest in young people who already have ties to San Mateo County and may carry that connection into future careers in public safety.
