Magic Johnson, Mark Walter, and Casey Wasserman team up for LA’s rebuilding initiative led by Gov. Newsom

Los Angeles, California – Governor Gavin Newsom has unveiled “LA Rises,” a new project meant to hasten Los Angeles’ rebuilding efforts in response to the tremendous damage that recent natural disasters have inflicted on California. Prominent businessmen leading this initiative include Casey Wasserman, LA28 Chairperson and President; Mark Walter, Chairman of the Dodgers; and basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson.”

The initiative, set against the backdrop of widespread damage across the region, seeks to harness the capabilities and resources of the private sector in tandem with city, county, and state efforts. Governor Newsom highlighted that a quick and efficient rehabilitation depends on this type of collaboration. According to Gov. Newsom, LA Rises represents the resiliency and determination to rebuild better and stronger.

“Los Angeles will rise again — stronger, more united, and more resilient than ever. Just as California came together to fight the fires, we’ll work together to rebuild. With Mark, Earvin and Casey’s proven leadership and deep commitment to Los Angeles, we’ll tap into the enormous creativity, experience, and resources of the private sector, alongside local, state, and federal efforts, to deliver a recovery that benefits all Angelenos,” said Gov. Newsom in a news release.

Beginning with an initial commitment of up to $100 million, Mark Walter and the Mark Walter Family Foundation as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation have started the funding. This is to be substantially expanded with extra private donations. The funds will mostly be used in Altadena, Pasadena, and the Pacific Palisades, the areas most affected by the disasters.

“LA Rises” aims to fill the gaps left by existing resources, ensuring that recovery plans are not only comprehensive but expedited. The initiative will focus on several key areas to support the recovery process:

  • Raising funds and expanding access to both philanthropic and private capital.
  • Developing financial strategies to bridge the gap between the current funding and the overall costs required for rebuilding.
  • Collaborating with other philanthropic entities and community organizations to enhance the effectiveness of the recovery efforts.
  • Keeping the community informed with unified and current information on rebuilding timelines and available resources.

Apart from local initiatives, “LA Rises” will cooperate with “California Rises,” a statewide project started by Governor Newsom and First Partner Siebel Newsom after the 2018 Camp Fire. Working with the California Fire Foundation, this alliance seeks to assist not only the impacted communities but also the firefighters and first responders who continue to serve.
