San Mateo County warns beachgoers to stay alert as Memorial Day weekend nears
San Mateo County, California – As Memorial Day weekend approaches, San Mateo County is asking beachgoers to treat a trip to the coast with the same care they would give any other safety decision.
The shoreline may look calm, open and inviting, but local officials are reminding visitors that ocean conditions can shift quickly, even on days that appear peaceful.
This week, electronic message boards will be placed along routes leading toward the San Mateo County coast, including the Half Moon Bay area, as part of a coordinated beach and ocean safety campaign. The effort is being led by the County of San Mateo, the City of Half Moon Bay, CAL Fire and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
The message is simple, but urgent: enjoy the coast, but stay alert.

Visitors are being warned to stay off rocks and never turn their backs on the ocean. Strong waves can arrive with little warning and sweep people into the water before they have time to react.
Families are also being urged to keep children within arm’s reach at all times, especially near the surf line, where sudden waves and strong currents can create danger in seconds.
Officials are also reminding people that risks do not disappear when the water looks calm. Along the San Mateo County coastline, cold water, powerful surf and unpredictable ocean movement can make swimming or standing too close to the edge especially hazardous. Large waves and currents can pull swimmers away from shore, even when the beach seems quiet.
The campaign also extends beyond the sand. With more visitors expected over the holiday weekend, drivers are being encouraged to allow extra time when traveling to and from the coast. Increased traffic is likely, and officials are urging motorists to drive sober, avoid distractions and move carefully through busy coastal areas.

Residents and visitors are also being asked to help spread the message by sharing beach safety information on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor and other channels. The goal is to reach people before they arrive, not after an emergency has already happened.
For those who witness someone in trouble, officials are emphasizing one clear instruction: call 9-1-1 immediately.
The San Mateo County coast remains one of the region’s most striking places, with scenic beaches, dramatic cliffs and wide ocean views. But ahead of Memorial Day, local agencies want every visitor to remember that beauty and danger can exist side by side, and a safe day at the beach begins with paying attention.
