San Mateo Sheriff’s Office brings teen drivers to Half Moon Bay Airport for free hands-on safety training
San Mateo County, California – For a new driver, the scariest moment on the road is not always the first solo trip. Sometimes it is the split second when traffic stops too fast, a car drifts into the lane, a phone buzzes, or a wet curve comes up quicker than expected. This summer, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is bringing back a free program built for exactly those moments.
The Sheriff’s Office’s FREE Teen Defensive Driver Training returns on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, giving young drivers a full day of professional instruction and hands-on practice at Half Moon Bay Airport. The eight-hour class is designed for new teen drivers who live in San Mateo County, are between 16 and 19 years old, and already have a valid driver’s license.

The idea is simple: teach teens what ordinary driver’s education often cannot fully show them. Behind the wheel, under the guidance of Sheriff’s Office deputies, participants will learn how to spot roadway hazards before they become emergencies, practice accident-avoidance strategies, and better understand how quickly distraction or impairment can change everything.
It is not a lecture dressed up as a class. It is a practical safety course, led by deputies who see the real-world results of bad decisions, inattention and inexperience on the road. For teen drivers, that experience can make the difference between panic and control when something unexpected happens.
The setting also matters. Half Moon Bay Airport offers a controlled space where young drivers can focus on learning skills without the pressure of regular traffic. That gives deputies room to walk participants through situations that help build awareness, confidence and safer habits before those skills are needed on busy county roads.
Parents looking for a useful summer opportunity may want to move quickly. The Sheriff’s Office says spots are limited and expected to fill fast. The agency also noted that the post will be updated once the class is full.
