Major U.S. 101 construction brings lane and ramp closures across San Mateo County through October 30

San Mateo, California – Drivers who rely on U.S. 101 for their daily commute may need to rethink their travel plans this October. A major stretch of the highway connecting several Peninsula communities will see temporary lane and ramp closures as construction crews carry out infrastructure improvements.

The disruptions will not be limited to overnight hours. Some work will also affect highway ramps during the day, making it important for motorists to check traffic conditions before leaving home.

The San Mateo Police Department has issued a traffic advisory informing residents about intermittent closures along U.S. 101 between South San Francisco and East Palo Alto. The restrictions will remain in effect at various times through Friday, October 30, as the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) continues work on a regional highway improvement project.

According to the advisory, the scheduled closures will affect both northbound and southbound traffic. Most nighttime restrictions will take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., while certain daytime ramp closures are planned between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The closures are intermittent, meaning drivers should not expect every affected lane or ramp to remain closed throughout the entire construction period.

The work is part of the U.S. 101 Multi-Asset Rehabilitation & Roadside Safety Project, an initiative focused on improving highway safety and maintaining important transportation infrastructure.

Construction activities include pavement improvements, guardrail work, drainage upgrades and electrical repairs. Crews will also carry out curb ramp improvements, requiring partial ramp closures at locations within the project boundaries.

These improvements are intended to address multiple infrastructure needs along the busy corridor rather than concentrate on a single section of roadway.

However, motorists and nearby residents should prepare for temporary inconveniences while construction continues. The scheduled activities may generate noise, and lane restrictions could disrupt normal traffic patterns.

Weather conditions will also influence the construction schedule. Caltrans has indicated that all planned work is weather dependent, meaning the timing of certain activities could change.

The San Mateo Police Department is encouraging drivers to allow additional travel time, reduce their speed when approaching construction zones and remain alert while passing through areas where crews are working.

Residents can monitor current highway conditions, review traffic disruptions and check for updated closures through Caltrans QuickMap.

With construction scheduled to continue until October 30, checking road conditions before traveling could help drivers avoid unexpected delays along this section of U.S. 101.
